Do not wait until every piece of media carries provenance.

Do not wait until all of these systems discover they need authorization, history, transition rules, reconciliation, interoperability, and durable state.

Because today, at Jackson Hole, the General Manager of the Bank for International Settlements gave a speech literally titled:
“Pushing the monetary frontier: stablecoins and tokenised deposits.”
The BIS is discussing programmable rails, tokenized deposits, interoperability, settlement finality, financial integrity, and the architecture necessary for digital money to remain trustworthy.

Three days ago, Anthropic announced that Claude’s chat memory and Cowork memory are being joined so the user does not have to repeatedly reconstruct context when moving between conversation and action.
The phrase being used to describe the result is almost perfect:
one continuous assistant.

In June, OpenAI announced a new memory architecture for ChatGPT designed around:
freshness, continuity and relevance.
The stated purpose is to make long-term interaction more useful across hundreds of millions of users and multi-year time horizons.

This August, Meta published its vision of personal superintelligence.
Every person gets an exceptionally capable personal agent.
It understands the person.
It understands their goals.
It handles personal information.

Its conclusion is the part that matters.
Long-term memory correctness is not merely the correctness of individual records.
It is a property of the:

If the vendor disappears, does the act disappear?

Then the model cannot be the source of the continuity.
The agent is an actor.
The continuing subject must exist upstream.

The EU is building wallets for credentials, authentication, signatures, and portable digital documents.
Excellent.

A credential tells me something about the holder.
What carries the holder’s continuing state?
What carries the history of accepted changes?
What survives after the issuing application closes?
What happens when authority changes?
What happens when the credential becomes part of a transaction?
What happens when identity, ownership, authorship, custody, and history must remain attached to the same continuing subject?
A wallet containing credentials is valuable.
It is not automatically a theory of continuing digital personhood.
Different layer.
THE PROVENANCE INDUSTRY HAS A CONTENT-CREDENTIAL DEPARTMENT

Was it modified?
Who signed it?
Can the provenance manifest be verified?
Good.
Necessary.
Now transfer the governed object.
Who owns it?
Who presently possesses custody?
What exact state preceded this state?
What authority permitted the transition?

Can the next holder continue from the resulting state?
Can the media still play?
Can the history survive another transfer?

Now the provenance problem has turned into:

Project Agorá is serious work.
It has brought together central banks and more than 40 financial institutions.
Its prototype combines tokenized commercial-bank deposits and tokenized central-bank reserves on a shared programmable platform.
In July 2026, 28 institutions and central banks conducted controlled real-value testing totaling roughly CHF 800,000 across 17 scenarios.
That is real work.

Their system is still being framed as a monetary system.
Tokenized deposits.

Meanwhile I spent the last year walking farther down the abstraction.
What is money actually doing?
A subject exists.
It has state.
Someone has authority over a valid transition.
A predecessor is consumed or superseded.
A successor results.
The transition must be valid.
History matters.
Current authority matters.
Settlement matters.
Divergence matters.
Reconciliation matters.
That is not unique to money.
Money is one species of governed state.

It requires enough continuity to answer:

Every box gets a conference.

I kept asking why the boxes were connected.
Memory needs provenance.
Provenance needs identity.
Identity needs authority.
Authority is meaningful only relative to state.
State needs history.
History needs valid transitions.

Portable continuity needs proof.
Offline operation permits divergence.
Divergence requires reconciliation.
Reconciliation requires ordering.
And once state can move between owners, applications, models, networks, and representations:

The strange 2025 language got forced through adversarial engineering until the nouns hardened.

What must remain true after the AI is gone?

They are arriving, from different directions, at pieces of the same underlying problem.

But do not come back with another pile of parts.
And do not wait until 2028 to tell me that continuity, portable identity, provenance, agent authority, programmable settlement, state trajectories, and user-owned memory were obviously always going to converge.
