This word gets abused because people collapse two different things.
A clock can be synchronized very accurately to an external reference.
That does not make the state machine independent of that reference.
A device can contain a highly stable oscillator.
That does not establish lawful succession.
A secure clock can resist tampering.
That does not tell two disconnected successors which inherited standing.
A consensus network can create ordered finality.
That does not leave the human independently authoritative; the network is part of the adjudication mechanism.
What matters here is not merely whether some instrument measures civil time accurately.
The requirement is stronger.
The temporal coordinate used by the state machine must be deterministically derivable under the governing construction rather than becoming a mutable environmental fact that silently decides standing.
That is the distinction.
Drift is not merely:
“my wristwatch is four seconds wrong.”
Drift at the state layer is:
two otherwise legitimate machines can derive different temporal meaning because their answer depends on mutable external conditions that are not themselves carried as deterministic law.
Once temporal meaning can drift, state interpretation can drift.
Once state interpretation can drift, succession can drift.
Once succession can drift, authority can drift.
And once authority can drift—
you do not have independent authority.
You have infrastructure-mediated authority.
That is the entire reason the temporal machine matters.

The engineering record is enough.
You know the test exists.

you have authentication, not present standing.
If your log preserves everything—
you have history, not authority.
If your AI chooses the answer—
your probabilistic reader became the judge.
If your terminology describes the solution—
you have language, not machinery.
If your deterministic rule depends on mutable external state—
your result can still drift.
If independent verifiers cannot reproduce it—
it is not independently deterministic.
If the original issuer must remain online—
the bearer never possessed the whole thing.
And if you solve all of those by building a deterministic temporal state machine integrated with lawful predecessor/successor transition—
then congratulations.

The name was never the escape hatch.
THE INVENTION IS THE CREATION.
That is what everybody keeps getting backward.
They think naming is ownership.
It is not.
They think terminology is invention.
It is not.
They think publishing a diagram is construction.
It is not.
They think saying “deterministic temporal continuity” after seeing the problem somehow transports them to the other side of the engineering gap.
It does not.
The machine either exists or it does not.
The transition either runs or it does not.
The verifier either derives the result or it does not.
The state either carries its lawful relation or it does not.
The object either survives the death of infrastructure or it does not.
Reality is wonderfully rude that way.
It does not care what you called the missing machine.
It only cares whether you built it.
So change the name.
Change the symbols.
Change the font.
Change the white paper.
Change the company.
Change the standards body.
Change the implementation language.
Change everything cosmetic.
Then remove the network.
Kill the server.
Throw away the database.
Separate the objects.
Create the competing successors.
Bring them back together.
Hand the evidence to an independent verifier.
And ask the only question that ever mattered:
WHICH STATE LAWFULLY BECAME PRESENT?
If your machine answers deterministically from the carried evidence and governing law—
now we have something to compare.
If it cannot—
you never escaped the problem.
You merely walked around the box and painted another door on the wall.
