SOURCE IS THE LAW. KRS-1 IS HOW YOU FIND IT.
I did not replace SOURCE with KRS-1. I built the register that shows you why SOURCE was necessary in the first place.
I need to make something very clear.
Because if you have been reading this archive long enough, you may look at the Kairos Register Standard and think:
Wait.
Isn’t this SOURCE?
No.
And the distinction matters.
SOURCE and KRS-1 are not competing ideas.
KRS-1 does not replace SOURCE.
SOURCE does not make KRS-1 redundant.
They operate at different layers.
And when you put them together, you can finally see the architecture I have been building from end to end.
Here it is in the shortest possible form:
SOURCE tells you what survives representation.
KRS-1 tells you how to reason your way back to it.
And Receiz makes what survived mechanically verifiable.
That is the relationship.
Now let me show you why it matters.
SOURCE
SOURCE begins with a very simple problem.
Something happens.
Then somebody describes what happened.
Those are not the same thing.
An object exists.
Then somebody creates a database record describing the object.
Those are not the same thing.
A person performs an action.
Then an institution records that action.
Those are not the same thing.
A document is published.
Then somebody summarizes the document.
Those are not the same thing.
A machine observes state.
Then the machine remembers its observation.
Those are not the same thing.
Reality produces representations.
But representation does not become reality merely because reality is inconvenient to carry.
That is the category error SOURCE attacks.
The source must survive the story.
The ancestor must not disappear underneath its descendants.
The copy does not become the original.
The database does not become the object.
The recollection does not become the event.
The interpretation does not become the artifact.
The institution does not become the authority merely because it controls the interface through which everyone sees the thing.
That is SOURCE.
SOURCE establishes a law of ancestry and representation.
When a representation descends from a source, the representation does not automatically inherit the source’s standing.
That is why provenance matters.
That is why artifacts matter.
That is why chronology matters.
That is why I keep telling you:
Bring the object.
Because eventually the story has to terminate somewhere.
Eventually you have to stop pointing at another description.
Another database.
Another model.
Another article.
Another institution.
Another API response.
Another screenshot.
Another person’s recollection.
Eventually I am going to ask:
What is this representation representing?
Bring me that.
That is SOURCE.
But there was still another problem.
HOW DID YOU KNOW TO ASK FOR THE SOURCE?
This is where KRS-1 enters.
Because the source/representation distinction is not the only category error humans and machines make.
Consider this sentence:
The AI remembers that Alice owns the object.
Sounds reasonable.
Until I ask:
Memory or state?
Those are different categories.
The machine can remember Alice perfectly while Bob is the lawful current owner.
Perfect memory does not create current state.
Now consider:
Every model agrees Alice owns it.
Fine.
Consensus or authority?
Different categories.
Ten thousand observers repeating the same representation do not manufacture lawful standing.
Now:
The database says Alice owns it.
Good.
Database representation or authoritative state?
Different categories.
Now:
The system retrieved a document saying Alice owns it.
Good.
Retrieval or evidence?
Different categories.
Now:
An expert interpreted the document to mean Alice owns it.
Fine.
Interpretation or source?
Different categories.
Now:
Alice was the owner yesterday.
Good.
Prior state or present state?
Different categories.
Now:
Alice transferred it to Bob.
Good.
Claimed transition or valid succession?
Different categories.
Do you see the problem?
You can be completely correct inside the wrong category.
That is one of the most dangerous forms of error because everything can look coherent.
The model can reason beautifully.
The database can return exactly what it contains.
The historian can quote the secondary source correctly.
The journalist can accurately repeat the institution.
The institution can accurately repeat its own records.
Everyone can agree.
And the entire chain can still be standing one layer away from the thing possessing authority.
That is what KRS-1 is built to expose.
KRS-1 IS THE REGISTER
KRS-1 asks a prior question:
What kind of thing am I looking at?
Not:
What does it say?
Not:
Who said it?
Not:
How confident am I?
Not:
How many people agree?
Not:
How intelligent is the observer?
First:
What layer is this?
Expression.
Representation.
Observation.
Source.
Artifact.
Provenance.
State.
Succession.
Authority.
Law.
Reality.
Do not collapse them.
That is the discipline.
Because once you collapse two layers, reasoning downstream can become extraordinarily sophisticated while remaining categorically wrong.
If memory becomes state, you start building better memory systems to solve missing authority.
If consensus becomes truth, you start building better voting systems to solve missing evidence.
If retrieval becomes verification, you start building larger search systems to solve missing provenance.
If the database becomes the object, you start building more resilient databases to solve missing portable authority.
If interpretation becomes source, you start arguing about narratives instead of inspecting artifacts.
If observation becomes reality, you become terrified every time the observer changes.
Sound familiar?
That is exactly what is happening across AI right now.
ACROSS MODELS?
They think they have a memory problem.
The model changed.
The context disappeared.
The provider changed.
The agent forgot.
The relationship broke.
So now everybody runs around trying to preserve more representation.
Move the memory.
Synchronize the memory.
Standardize the memory.
Share the memory.
Retrieve the memory.
Compress the memory.
Transfer the memory across models.
And KRS-1 asks one devastating question:
Why was the model carrying the authoritative continuity in the first place?
That is the register shift.
Memory is representation of prior observation.
State is what currently stands.
Authority determines which state has standing.
Succession determines how one authoritative state lawfully became another.
These are not synonyms.
So you can solve cross-model memory perfectly and still not solve continuity.
You can make every model remember every prior interaction forever.
Congratulations.
Now two contradictory descendants exist.
Which one stands?
Memory cannot answer that.
A larger context window cannot answer that.
Better retrieval cannot answer that.
A smarter model cannot answer that.
The model can explain the conflict.
The model can summarize the conflict.
The model can predict which answer you probably want.
The model can remember every fact surrounding the conflict.
It still cannot manufacture the law governing succession.
That has to exist outside the observer.
Which means the problem was never fundamentally:
How does the next model remember?
The higher question was:
What survives when the model disappears?
Now you are in the right register.
And once you are in the right register, SOURCE becomes obvious.
KRS-1 LEADS YOU TO SOURCE
This is the relationship.
KRS-1 says:
Do not confuse representation with source.
SOURCE says:
Good. Now preserve the source through representation.
KRS-1 says:
Do not confuse memory with state.
SOURCE says:
Good. Return to the authoritative artifact from which the representation descended.
KRS-1 says:
Do not confuse confidence with authority.
SOURCE says:
Good. Authority must be established by something other than the observer’s confidence.
KRS-1 says:
Do not confuse retrieval with evidence.
SOURCE says:
Good. Retrieve the source, not merely another story about the source.
KRS-1 says:
Do not confuse interpretation with provenance.
SOURCE says:
Good. Preserve the ancestry so the interpretation can always be checked against what preceded it.
KRS-1 finds the category error.
SOURCE restores the hierarchy.
That is why they are different.
And that is why they belong together.
THEN RECEIZ ENTERS
But I did not stop there.
Because saying:
The source must survive the story
is not enough.
Fine.
How?
How does an object preserve its ancestry?
How does it carry provenance?
How does it establish authorship?
How does it change state?
How does it establish the valid predecessor?
How does it create a successor?
How do you know a predecessor was consumed?
How do you detect divergence?
How do you preserve append-only history?
How do you verify without asking the institution that issued it?
How does the thing survive the server?
How does it survive the database?
How does it survive the application?
How does it survive the network?
How does it survive the observer?
That is where Receiz becomes important.
Receiz is not merely another argument that SOURCE is correct.
It makes the distinction executable.
The object carries the case.
Genesis.
Provenance.
Authority.
State.
Predecessor.
Transition.
Successor.
History.
Verification.
The server can index it.
The database can project it.
The interface can display it.
The AI can interpret it.
But none of those readers become the thing merely because they read it.
That is the architectural consequence of SOURCE.
And KRS-1 tells you why that architecture matters.
THE SERVER IS A READER
This is where the whole thing becomes almost embarrassingly simple.
The server is a reader.
The database is a reader.
The application is a reader.
The model is a reader.
The journalist is a reader.
The historian is a reader.
The institution can be a reader.
I am a reader.
You are a reader.
Readers can observe.
Readers can interpret.
Readers can remember.
Readers can represent.
Readers can index.
Readers can retrieve.
Readers can calculate.
Readers can argue.
Readers can be extremely intelligent.
But intelligence does not automatically create authority over the thing being read.
That is the mistake.
We kept promoting readers into reality.
Then we wondered why reality disappeared when the reader disappeared.
Of course it did.
You put reality inside the observer.
REALITY MUST SURVIVE THE READER
This is the closure.
SOURCE says:
The source must survive the story.
Receiz says:
The object must survive the server.
The continuity architecture says:
State must survive the observer.
KRS-1 says:
Reality must survive the reader.
Those are not four unrelated slogans.
They are the same architecture appearing at different levels.
SOURCE is the law governing source and representation.
Receiz makes portions of that law executable through portable, verifiable objects and deterministic state transition.
KRS-1 is the reasoning standard that prevents you from collapsing the categories before you ever get there.
And Kai-Klok sits underneath the temporal problem because succession without ordering eventually forces another question:
According to what temporal position and ordering are transitions being distinguished?
This is why you cannot read this archive backwards.
I did not wake up yesterday, invent KRS-1, and then retrofit a philosophy around it.
The machine came first.
The failures came first.
The objects came first.
The tests came first.
The offline verifier came first.
The state machine came first.
The fights over databases came first.
The fights over memory came first.
The fights over provenance came first.
The fights over chronology came first.
The insistence on the source came first.
I kept encountering the same category error in different domains.
Eventually I named the reasoning operation that kept exposing it.
THE STACK
So now I can finally show you the architecture cleanly.
Temporal position and deterministic ordering.
Where are we in the sequence?
↓
Portable proof, state, transition, succession, provenance and verification.
What currently stands, and can the transition be verified?
↓
The law separating the originating thing from its representations and preserving ancestry through interpretation.
What survives the story?
↓
The register for identifying which category you are actually reasoning about and climbing until authority is located.
What kind of thing am I looking at, and where does its standing actually come from?
↓
REALITY
The thing that does not require the current reader to continue existing.
What remains true when I disappear?
That is the stack.
Do not collapse it.
AND NOTICE WHAT THIS DOES TO AI
This is why I have been laughing at the sudden panic around cross-model memory.
They are not stupid for noticing the problem.
The problem is real.
They are standing in the wrong register.
They are trying to preserve the reader.
I preserved what the reader reads.
They are trying to make intelligence carry continuity.
I moved continuity into the authoritative object.
They are trying to synchronize representations.
I asked which thing has standing when representations disagree.
They are trying to make memory survive the model.
I asked why reality needed the model to remember it.
That is a completely different problem.
And once you see the difference, you cannot unsee it.
THIS ALSO CHANGES HOW YOU READ HISTORY
Suppose ten books repeat the same claim.
KRS-1 asks:
Ten representations of what?
Suppose they all cite the same nineteenth-century historian.
KRS-1 asks:
Interpretation or source?
Suppose that historian cites a translated medieval document.
KRS-1 asks:
Translation or artifact?
Suppose the translation inserts a modern category that did not exist in the original language.
KRS-1 asks:
Whose interpretation entered the chain?
Now SOURCE becomes operative.
Walk backward.
Preserve ancestry.
Do not allow the descendant to silently rewrite the ancestor.
This is why chronology matters.
This is why provenance matters.
This is why primary artifacts matter.
And this is why hindsight is so dangerous.
The later world possesses more representations.
That does not mean it possesses more authority over what happened earlier.
Sometimes it possesses more evidence.
Sometimes it possesses better tools.
Sometimes it discovers an artifact nobody previously had.
Wonderful.
Bring it.
But the future does not acquire permission to rewrite the past merely by arriving later.
The descendant cannot move the ancestor.
THIS ALSO CHANGES HOW YOU READ ME
This part matters most.
Do not believe me because I wrote this.
That would violate the entire standard.
Apply it to me.
If I say I built something:
Bring the artifact.
If I say I published something earlier:
Bring the timestamped publication.
If I claim a capability:
Run the test.
If I claim succession:
Inspect the chain.
If I claim provenance:
Trace the ancestry.
If I claim SOURCE:
Find the source.
If I claim KRS-1 works:
Use it against KRS-1.
I am not exempt because I named the standard.
I am a reader too.
That is the whole point.
A reasoning system that depends upon the authority of its author is not finished.
A proof system that depends upon trusting its issuer is not finished.
A reality that depends upon remembering which observer you trusted is not finished.
The law has to survive me too.
THAT IS THE DIFFERENCE
So when you see SOURCE and KRS-1 beside each other, do not combine them.
Keep the distinction.
SOURCE is a law.
It protects the originating thing from being silently replaced by its descendants.
KRS-1 is a register.
It protects reasoning from silently replacing one category with another.
SOURCE says:
The source must survive the story.
KRS-1 asks:
Are you even looking at the source?
SOURCE says:
Do not let representation inherit authority merely by repetition.
KRS-1 asks:
Did you just confuse consensus with authority?
SOURCE says:
Preserve ancestry.
KRS-1 asks:
Did you establish provenance?
SOURCE says:
Return to what stands.
KRS-1 asks:
Did you confuse memory with state?
And Receiz says:
Fine. Stop arguing. Verify the object.
That is the closure.
Not better memory.
Not better storytelling.
Not a bigger database.
Not a more persuasive institution.
Not a smarter reader.
A cleaner hierarchy.
A surviving source.
An authoritative object.
A lawful succession.
A verifiable state.
A reader that knows it is a reader.
And a reality that does not disappear when the reader changes.
SOURCE tells you what survives representation.
KRS-1 tells you how to reason your way back to it.
Receiz makes what survived mechanically verifiable.
Kai-Klok gives succession a deterministic temporal foundation.
And the final test remains the simplest one:
REALITY MUST SURVIVE THE READER.
